Ani L’dodi V’dodi Li.
Haroeh bashoshanim.
exerpt from Ani L’dodi V’dodi Li
from the album: Sacred Songs of Torah and Psalms
The song is from the extremely erotic Hebrew poetry of King Solomon called the Song of Songs (Shir haShirim).
The first line is used often in Jewish marriage ceremonies and I truly love the sentiment.
I am my beloved’s and she is mine.
But..... grazing in a bed of roses???
My take on that is the following.
Rose petals, roses themselves and even the essences made from pure rose petals are considered purifying.
But to graze in a bed of roses, to partake of this powerful thing, one must be careful of the thorns.
And so it is in any true love. To partake of the sweetest essence, we must still carefully navigate the thorny parts.
What is most interesting to me is that these passionate love poems are written by Kind Solomon to God.
My final take on that. May we all see our partners as the embodiment of divinity.... Ken
